TYPES OF POEM
Before we discuss types of poems let us see 2 categories of poems;
1.Closed form/traditional/rhythmical poems:these are poems that observe all old rules of writing poems and they have got the following characteristics
▪They have equal number of verses in each stanza
▪They have equal length of verses in each stanza
▪They have regular meter
▪they have regular rhyme pattern, this means they can be sung.
2.Open ended/free verse/modern poems:these are poems which do not follow the old rules of writing poems, they only stick on messages and they have got the following characteristics
▪They don't have equal number of verses in each stanza
▪They don't have equal length of verses in a stanza
▪They don't observe meter, since they are composed to be cited not to be sung.
▪They don't have regular rhymes and if they contain, they are not persistent.
TYPES OF POEMS
1.Narrative poem: is a poem that narrates(tells a story) story about people or society it is usually a non dramatic.
2.Lyric poem:is a short poem that expresses about personal feelings of an individual towards something for instance "Eat more"
3.Didactic poem:is a poem that gives instruction on how something can be done or organised for instance "Your pain"
4.Sonnet poem:is a poem with 14 verses only, usually devided into two parts, the first part carries the first 8 verses which is called octave (explains how something is) the second part is called sestet that carries the last six verses. (it gives solution of what has been explained by the octave) E.g "If we must die"
5.Ballad poem:is a poem that shows two sides that are in conflict or is a poem that based on folk tale for example "Ballad of the land lord"
6.Descriptive poem:is a poem that describes how something is or how something looks like "A baby is a European"
7.Elegy poem:is a poem that expresses about Mournful events like "Death of a comrade"
8.Ode poem:is a poem that praises something, some one or place. E.g "The socialists"
9 Epic poem:Is a long poem that bases on history of a legend or society
10 . Limerick poem:is a poem that bases on humour,its stanza is made up of 5 verse. E.g "Abu Nuwas poems"
